Coal, lava and more in the generator produce power for the grid.
Start at the workbench: Generator (iron and coal), then Energy Battery and Alloy Smelter with Abysskern Alloy from the Nether. In the Alloy Smelter you smelt alloys and cables. All electro machines and grid parts craft afterwards at the workbench - expensive, with lots of alloy bars plus Abysskern. Alloy Smelter L2 (Asterolith) unlocks speed, insta and XP tank upgrades - those you smelt only in the L2 smelter.

In the Alloy Smelter you also find classic alloys (steel, bronze, electrum, dark steel, …). You need them as ingredients for expensive workbench machines. Speed, insta and XP tank upgrades are smelted only in Alloy Smelter L2.
You can optionally open structure loot chests and minecarts with an animated slots UI. Default is OFF, loot itself does not change. Enable with /lootanim on (also /nlc anim on).
